On the subject of public schools, I wish I had never gone at all. I asked my parents if I could be homeschooled in 9th grade but unfortunately they refused. My school didn't let people take AP classes until Senior year, with the one exception of AP US History Junior year, and so we all had to suffer through a bunch of shitty teaching for the first three years (with just a few exceptions).

In total, pre-collegiate schools have wasted at least 8500 hours of my time. When you look at it bluntly like that, it's really depressing.
Heh, schools are just designed to drill in authoritarian principles (ie, do what you're told without asking questions). They're useful for that purpose. But generally, they're overrun by teachers who feel that they need to assert authority rather than teach, and by students/parents who consider competitive aspects the most important (if you can't compare to others in your class, you're screwed). It's a pretty bad state, I think that the education system everywhere needs a rethink.

so there is a fire near my house right next to a gas station and a pizza place. :( this particular spot is where people go and smoke so i think they had something to do with it.

I think that localized schooling should be given a chance. It should at least be tried. We have record national spending on education, and it's not really helping.

Those poor pizzas. I hope they don't get over-cooked.

localized schooling?

Non-nationally funded schooling.

We already have private schools... I don't understand what you are getting at.

I think he's saying that the public school system should be done away with?

leet_muffin, please clarify.

You can't just do away with the public school system. Millions of Americans would go uneducated.

Personally, I think the idea of free, public education is wonderful. I'm just not happy with the implementation.

Sidoh

There are alternatives to providing public education.  For example, some cities provide a voucher system where you're given money to be used for private schooling.

Aside from the fact that a large proportion wouldn't use the vouchers, the poor would be left with by far the worst choices.  This clearly would be a worse system.

I don't think that's what he's getting at. Although I could be wrong.

Community-level schools might be a step up from the current system, though. Dunno. :)

Probably so.  I don't feel well informed enough to make any sort of claim.
