Joe

I need to put some more music on my iPod. OK, this should take a minute or two. Right? WRONG.

I walk upstairs. Good so far. I plug my iPod into my brother's computer. Nothing. I unplug it, and plug it back in. I restart, killing everything (internet using) I'm running downstairs. The iPod finally spins up. And guess what, I sit there for 45 minutes waiting for the fucking thing to mount.

Now, where do computer illiterate people come in here? This is a fucking 1.8GHz computer. It should load Windows XP in a matter of 30 seconds or so. Nope, a good 5-10 minutes. It pisses me off how people can be so god damn stupid. I set him up with ClamScan, SpyBot S&D, and AdAware, showing him step by step how to use the things. I even defrag his fucking box for him once a month. I double click my computer and it takes fucking 30 seconds to draw the damn box. WHY CANT IDIOTS JUST RUN ANTI-SPYWARE?! He fucking sits there, installs MY WEB SEARCH in Firefox and USES IT.

Yay, I vented. And guess what? I'm still pissed.

Another slow day in the life of Joe.

EDIT -
PS: I never did get the stuff moved to my iPod.

You might be right about that, Joe.

You know, compared to the majority of people here, YOU are computer illiterate. Your words will come back to haunt you. :P

No offence or anything, but go learn assembly and stay locked up in a basement programming for an entire summer while the rest of your classmates are out running the streets, breaking eachothers necks, and getting arrested, and come back and openly admit to being illiterate. =)

Been there, done that.  For five summers in a row.

Here's an idea.  Why don't you use your own computer?

Wow, you are fuckin' brilliant!
Knowing programming does NOT make you computer literate. Quite the contrary, my neighbor programs in C and is quite possibly the worst person when it comes to computers.

Its gtkpod's fault I need to reformat my iPod in the first place. =p

Interesting deadly. Literacy is the definition of knowing a language. If you know a computer programming language, say C++, you are literate in C++. C++ is a computer programming language. I am computer literate.

I think you need to look up the definition of literate.  It has several meanings.

Merriam-Webster OnLine:
Quote1 a : EDUCATED, CULTURED b : able to read and write
2 a : versed in literature or creative writing : LITERARY b : LUCID, POLISHED <a literate essay> c : having knowledge or competence <computer-literate> <politically literate>- lit·er·ate·ly adverb
- lit·er·ate·ness noun

Ergot

False conclusion. A proper conclusion is "I am literate in the computer programming language, C++"

I think you've confused the definitions of literacy and fluency.

gtkpod works great if you only use it.  I find if I go back and forth between iTunes and GTKPod, it screws up, but if I stick with one, it's fine.

And incidentally, if you're manually mounting the iPod, make sure you specify "-t vfat", otherwise it might not get the 8.3 filenames right.

iago, you're my hero. I hate iTunes anyhow =p

EDIT -
I love my house. I run Linux. My brother runs Windows. My mom runs MacOS X.

Windows: Plug it in. It fails to mount. Unplug it dispite "Do not unplug" warning.
MacOS X: Plug in. Initialize to 100% nothing.
Windows: Plug it in with iPod updater open. I FOUND AN IPOD! O RLY? Restore it.
Currently searching for firewire power cable to do a firmware reflash.

EDIT -
Reflashed. Dragged everything to my iPod. Clicked sync.
iPod: *whirr*
gtkpod: 8 minutes remaining.
Joe: Oh dear God please let this work!

EDIT -
God </3 iPods.
iPod: *nothing*
Joe: Oh crap.
