What laptop do you guys think is the best for college students?  I am currently looking at the HP Pavilion dv1650 because I really like what i've seen of it and I can afford it.

Does anyone know anything about this particular laptop?  And what are your suggestions for laptops?

As I said, it doesn't matter so much which kind you get, as much as the warranty.  Best Buy's plan is about $300, but it covers anything that breaks.  On my first I had the battery replaced once, and then the whole thing conked out.  Refunded me the entire purchase price of the first for a new one.  On my way to having a second battery replacement on this one as well as getting a new screen installed.

The one I have now is an HP zd7010.  I don't recommend getting one unless you do a lot of programming; the wide screen is nice for the toolbars on the side of the Visual Studio environment.  Having the extra width allows me to have a typical screen's width in between the toolbars when they're displayed.

My brother got a MacBook Pro when he went off to college. It is pretty good, and I really like it. I wouldn't see the point in getting anything extra special like most people here usually do(1 GB RAM, $500 video cards, etc) since it will be mostly for schoolwork(or maybe not  ;)).

Well, they want me to have Windows on my laptop.  And yes, I am aware of Mac having intels now, but I kind of want just Windows/Linux on my computer.

I am probably going to stick with the dv1650, I really like it.

I am going into Computer Science, so there is a possiblility of that. :)

When I go off to college I'm going to cry when they require us to install Windows programs. I'm not even going to bother with wine, probably, but hopefully Linux will have NTFS support so I can mount C: in Linux to do work.
Quote from: Camel on June 09, 2009, 04:12:23 PMI'd personally do as Joe suggests

You might be right about that, Joe.

They don't *require* exactly, but it's strongly encouraged with what I am going into.  But, not all colleges and degrees require that.  I know that at MU for the Journalism school they encourage people to buy Macs.. So it is different depending on the field you go into and the college you choose.

[Edit]
P.S.
My post count is 666.. I am officially evil until I post again.. *Beware*

At my university pretty much all of the machines were Windows, although they provided shared authentication with a Linux server that you could ssh to (general.asu.edu).
