Recommendation for a GOOD PSU..
« on: December 09, 2006, 11:30:15 am »
My current PSU thought it would be super funny if it started spinning up every other second, then stopping. I need one that'll get all my IDE/SATA powered things, and it won't die or catch on fire or be lame again.

:(.

If no one recommends me one, I go to the store, hand my current PSU to someone, and say "I need one of these." iago recommended that.

Fuck my Turbo-Cool 510 ATX-PFC Deluxe, I want one that isn't gay.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

$0-300. Somewhere between there. I'm easy going. I don't care if it's expensive, as long as I don't have to fucking replace it after a year. Or two years. Or let's go for a long time.

I think you should just go and get anything that's cheap and provides you with enough power.

Yea....that's a bad idea.  PSU's perform a very crucial role that isn't as simple as you may think.  It's important you get a quality one to protect your machine.

I'm a big Thermaltake fan (no pun intended).  Anything they sell will be fail-open and have proper current limiters.  The only thing you have to decide is how much power you need out of it and how much you want to spend to make it quieter.

I have a bunch of old ones.  I can check the wattage on them (when I get home) and mail you one if you want me to.

Newby said he wanted one that will last a while. In my experience, I've had cheap ones go out from 1 week, to 6 months.

Search through and read the reviews. Make sure it has the SATA cable. You should find something pretty good.

My dad's went out in a lightening storm, but I've had the same luck as Ergot.  I've had the same computer (with a few changed components) for 2 and a half years using the same 400 W power supply the entire time.  I'm not sure of its brand, but it has served me well, I guess.  My server (which is even older; I think its 4 years old) has also had the same PSU and has suffered the fate of being on any time there's power to keep it alive.

I'm not sure why this thread's discussion seems to think that how much power the PSU supplies is at all relevant to its quality.

Quote from: http://www.5starsupport.com/tutorial/build_gaming.htm
Buy the best PSU you can afford because you don’t want to not be down and not able to play because you used a cheap PSU and had it damaged one of your components. It can and has happened before since cheap PSU will not try to even out small power spikes and sags.
Quote from: http://www.xoxideforums.com/hardware-component-customization/48273-6800nu-softmod-tutorial-power.html
Most newcomers to the PC world, often overlook one of the most important aspects of a stable system. The power supply never garners as much attention as it deserves. Afterall, a poor power supply can render some of your hadware useless, or destroy your machine as a whole. "How do I choose a power supply?", you say?

Most people go by the wattage rating that is advertised somewhere on the power supply itself. Thats all it is everybody, just a rating. Most of the power supplies on the market today are rated at their peak output, which means it puts out that much power when its begging for mercy....ready to take your rig with it. Wattage means absolutely nothing. Heck, a hair dryer puts out 1200W, do you think it could power your computer? Think of a cheap 600W amplifier, but put it up against a quality 400W and it gets killed. Quality is what we're after everybody.
If you've boughten a cheap PSU, and it hasn't gone out on you, you're lucky. Sure, they probably do fine more times than not, but you don't want to take the chance of damaging hundreds of dollars of equipment, just to save $40.

EDIT: Newby, I found a great PSU for you: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153023
993 reviews, with only complaints of a bad PSU upon arrival, and too bulky of cables. Best rated power supply for your specific needs, and they have a weekend special resulting in it only costing $27.99 after a $12 mail-in rebate.

Even if the chance of failure is smaller than the chance of success, the amount of risk involved would consider the outcome lucky.

Think of a game of Russian Roulette with 6 people. You only played one round, and you don't die. Even though there's only a 1/6 chance you could have died, if you look back upon the event, you'd still consider yourself lucky for coming out alive.

Evidently, the chances of failure are massively smaller than the chance of success.  2.5 years of using a lot of equipment on the same PSU that came with my case without a single problem suggests that.  So do the rest of my computers (other than my dad's, but like I said, his was fried in a surge).

I see what you're saying, but I think you're scrounging for a defense that makes little sense so you don't look like a complete ass.

No, it's what I meant when I first said it. That's why I put them right next to each other. If you don't think it makes much sense, then ignore and stop picking out every little thing in my arguments that really don't effect the main idea. I'm not the best with words, but I know both you and Ergot perfectly understood what I was getting across.

Yes.  I'm pretty sure that I know what you were saying in both cases, but I believe that they directly contradict each other.  I think both of those things that you said were supposed to be profound pieces of your argument, so I don't think we (err... Ergot) was being pedantic.

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

So it's not the power supply. I'm just a retard.

It's the heatsink on my video card.

Time to buy a new one! :D

Any recommendations? I have an ATi Radeon X800 XT PE.
