So I have a bunch of reading and physics homework due tomorrow, and a bunch of math homework due Tuesday. I am thinking about leaving myself two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) to write a 4-5 page paper on the Iliad due Thursday morning. And by 2 days, I mean like 5-7 hours each day = 10-14 hours to do so. This paper will be 30% of my class grade, although he only gave us the prompt on last Thursday, giving us a week to do it. Do you guys think this is too rushed?

I suppose it depends on how well you work under that kind of stress.  I know when I put a big assignment off until the last minute (especially if it isn't a math-related subject), I tend to do much worse than if I were to start it earlier.

We have calc assignments due once a week, but they take a few hours to do.  For the last few weeks, I've been puting it off until the night before its due.  I go to a coffee shop with my friend and pump out all of the problems while we're there.  It takes forever, but I totally pwn the quizzes since I'm so fresh on the material.

2 days is all I'm given for some of my essays, grow a pair.

Are your essays worth 30% of your class grade?

In my rhetoric class my essays are the only thing that contributes to our final grade, with the exception of the school given Rhetoric Proficiency Exam.

How many essays do you have to write?  Three?

We've had 3 so far, we start our fourth Thursday. It is about 1 per week for that class.

Really?  14 hours for 5 pages?  It should be about 20 minutes a page...unless I just rock writing papers (which I do).

So no paper you've written is worth 30% of your grade.  Don't tell someone to "grow some balls" when you fail to sympathize with their situation.

Oh, stop.  You're so modest!

Chavo

How well do you know the Iliad? Do you need outside references? Do you have a thesis yet?

The time necessary to write 4-5 pages should be minimal (assuming MLA format with double-spacing, 1" margins, etc).  Most of your time should be finding excerpts from the text (unless you are ridiculously organized and highlight/bookmark things), finding related sources, and coming up with personal examples.

I'm saying when he gets into college it will be normal so he just needs to get used to it. It doesn't take 2 days to write a 4-5 page paper anyway.

Most of the uninformed.org papers I have written (somewhere on the order of 30-60p per article typically) were done in either one or two days, not counting research and editing.  Short essays are definitely not a big problem as long as you've got a clear idea of what you're going to write and then sit down and write it out all at once.
