DVD or WMV to MP4

A friend has some WMV files and a few DVDs he wants to convert so that he can play on his PSP.  Any suggestions on how he could go about this (for free)?

MeGUI is nice, but it's pretty complicated for a beginner.  Unfortunately, it's so amazingly awesome I have to recommend it.  Videora PSP Converter is also really good, but it will only convert video format to PSP compatible video formats.

I use http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ to convert wmv/avis to mp4 for my Cell-Phone/PSP.  It works well enough for free and has some good customization.
