And no, it's not required to buy it.  I did have to pay some $50 fee last year when I joined though.  I'm just buying this stuff to differentiate myself from the rest of the graduating class.  The majority will have just the cap, gown, and colored hood denoting their college/degree type.  I probably won't purchase the medallion, too tacky.  But I definitely will get the cords, and most likely the stole too, since it has the emblem visible on it.
