10-50 million people is a pretty broad estimation.

Sorry... early morning post.  It's 50-100, which is even broader, but it's understandable given the circumstances.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic
The global mortality rate from the 1918/1919 pandemic is not known, but it is estimated that 10% to 20% of those who were infected died. With about a third of the world population infected, this case-fatality ratio means that 3% to 6% of the entire global population died.[12] Influenza may have killed as many as 25 million in its first 25 weeks. Older estimates say it killed 40–50 million people[4] while current estimates say 50 million to 100 million people worldwide were killed.[13] This pandemic has been described as "the greatest medical holocaust in history" and may have killed more people than the Black Death.[14]

I do, but based on your previous post, I don't really want to discuss it with you.

they've already given the nobel peace prize to former terrorists, I fail to see how giving it to former kenyans is a big deal

That, I'm aware of.. but it doesn't really explain Trust's post, does it? Maybe I'm just crazy :)... or not crazy enough?

I don't know much about Obama's plan that apparently merited him receiving a Noble Peace Prize, but I believe that it's just a hypothetical plan that he has not even successfully finished yet. Hence, trust, like many others I know, are mocking the awarding of the Peace Prize for a situation that may or may not go as planned, instead of examining Obama's merit on an ex post facto basis.

That and trust is just glib.

Don't assume you know things about epidemiology that you don't.

I won't claim any kind of expertise, but I think it's important to recognize the risk.

H1N1 is the same type of influenza that caused the 1918 pandemic, which killed 10-50 million people.  Given that its first outbreak was relatively mild, it seems silly to rule out the possibility that it could happen this time too.

Sure, unless you consider the lack of medical technology they had back then, not to mention the lack of media. We have two clear advantages:

- Our medical technique isn't "drink a bottle of rum and cut it off"
- People actually know what H1N1 is. Unless they made extensive use of carrier pigeons.

sure, we're better equipped, but that doesn't mean it isn't a serious concern...

Joe wanted to fly his truck using long pieces of wood. Clearly he's not well-equipped to think rationally.

Sadly :(

It was a lot easier to cut off stuff after I drank the bottle.  The patients weren't very happy about it, however.
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...
