Tree Killer

Hosty Mush has a cottage on a well-treed lot in Northern Manitoba.  She keeps her lot in very good condition by fertilizing, pruning, and removing deadwood/broken branches.  however, she has a strange habit regarding her little forest.  Occasionally, she'll chop down a perfectly healthy tree and put it in a large pot.  She waters it and fertilizes it for a short time.  Then she grows tired of it and burns it.  Could there be any explanation for this strange behaviour?

The tree looked good(?:P) and she kept it as a plant, but then it grew to large, she used it as firewood.
