I like that one because there's so little space taking up by the window manager. I have mine set to take up no room, everything ends up behind open windows.

PNG files are zipped bitmaps. You should use jpegs for real-life images, and pngs for things that are compressible or where a bitmap is desired.

I learned that when I hacked the image verifier on phpBB2 to stop the spam bots on my forum. I had to learn the PNG format to change the image generator. It actually has a bunch of cool formats, but the most commonly used ones are zipped 8-bit (grayscale) or 32-bit bitmaps.
