Sigur Ros
« on: July 23, 2006, 11:41:14 am »
Since this search says that audio is a form of media, I will be posting this here =P.

Anyone here know of Sigur Ros? It's an icelandic band whose name translates to "Victory Rose." Their music is incredible, but not a lot of people know of it and a lot of people don't appreciate it. I highly recommend getting their music and if you do you have to get a whole album because their songs in each album are all connected and they flow and transition very well. I could go even further to say this of their albums...

Anyways, for those of you who know about them, I'd be happy to discuss their music and for those of you who are listening to it for the first time, what do you think?

Sounds interesting, currently looking for some.

EDIT: found some. Not really my style, but eh. If I listened to alot of this, my answers on your sleeping survey would severely change.

lol!

The music can be very relaxing but that's not all it is. I'd recommend listening to songs from the album Takk..., especially the songs Takk, Glosoli, Hoppipolla, and Mea Blonsair. I'd also recommend the song Von but not the album Von =P.

I'd imagine that you listened to what the band calls the brackets album (entitled "()" without the quotes). Every song is untitled in that album. Kinda funny. Is this what you listened to?

Free legal Sigur Ros music on Sigur Ros's website!

Everyone listen to this song! It's absolutely beautiful!!! (If you don't like it at first then give it a chance and listen the whole way through.)
If you want to listen to more, there's a bunch more for free here. I suggest "von" and "staralfur" after listening to the above song.

It's mediocre.  It's too timid for my taste.  I don't mind it at all and it is exceptionally beautiful in some parts, but it's not something I would listen to repetitively for days on end.  I actually love orchestrated music; it just has to be the correct kind to suit my taste.  For example, the soundtrack for Children of Dune composed by Brian Tyler is excellent, in my opinion.

Sidoh: Well, glad you tried it and thought about it and responded. That music, and "Vidrar" in particular, makes me love this world and all the people in it. I didn't know music so beautiful existed. Everyone should have music that they feel that way about, whether it's Sigur Ros or not =p.

I'll try out Children of Dune btw.

Everyone else: Come on you lazy bums! Try it and respond.

* adds Lobo to his buddy list *

Yeah, Sigur Ros is amazing. The first time I listened to them I was like "wtf this is friggin' weird" but then I kept listening to them and just became amazed. They seriously do affect my mood.

They also have a wide variety of music. They have less "timid" music (e.g., the albums Von and Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do) although I don't like that adjective describing  Sigur Ros. Every album of theirs is very different, and each album is very cohesive: oftentimes you are listening to the album and not a particular song. Take the album "Takk..." for instance. The songs Takk, Glosoli, Hoppipolla, and Mea Blonsair flow together very well, as is evident in the transition from song to song.

I also think of them as artistic. I'll just talk about one song to try to convince you to listen to them.

The song:
http://www.hi.is/~bjornbjo/sigur_ros-vidrar_vel.mp3

So it starts out like nails on glass for like 30 secs. Well, maybe not quite, but sorta like that. Why? Well, they let you take your own meaning from that. When the piano melody starts up I think of a butterfly flying out from underneath a pile of manure. Good spawning from a world of bad. etc. etc.

Then the piano melody goes for a little while and then a different class of instruments are added later which keep it interesting and they go on for a little while and then it builds up... and I feel like I'm in heaven =p.

And then the ending is also artistic, not in the same sense as objective musical beauty but in the sense of poetry. The exceptionally beautiful music that spawns from the soft, consistent piano melody, only lasts for such a short while. And then it gets slaughtered by instruments screwing up and what you'd imagine when a band collapses on stage. This isn't a recording of live music, so you know it's not that. And then it ends all suddenly with the violin. It's like they're teasing you.

And it's interesting how the beautiful melody comes from the piano and the violin makes the last note that ends it.

Anyways, you can take your own meaning from this song. I think it's objectively beautiful and subjectively poetic. And I think this song and that description is an accurate representation of the band.

Since beauty is a completely opinionated term, how can you claim that this song is "objectively beautiful?"  That seems very much like an oxymoron to me. :P

I don't think beauty is a completely opinionated term. For instance, we all saw Kaleeko's pics and we all think she's beautiful.

I don't think there's much of a gray area between objective and subjective terms.

Just because an oppinion is largely agreed on by other people doesn't mean that it becomes "pseudo-objective."  Most males in the US like football, but that doesn't mean that "FOOTBALL IS AWESOME!!!!!"
