Yesterday I was out in the desert, found an open area with some standing water.  I started out in 4wd & then switched to 2wd...played around & went on my way.

Today, my friend says we should go back out there & have some fun.  COOL!
We get out to where I was, there is a bit more water because it had rainned this morning & lastnight.  I decided to just try it in 2wd to begin with.  I got about 20 feet & started to sink & slow way down...kept the gas on & flipped to 4wd...not fast enough :(

I try 4lo & rockin it out, not a thing.

I piled some rocks around all tires, nodda.

SO, I called my dad to bring his old tow rope & come get me.  He hooked up his rope & another guy's strap (he stopped there too) & began to pull...rope ripped in half, too old I guess.

SO, I call Action Towing.  40 minutes later they arrive.  Hydraulics on the thing ain't workin.  By this time I've talked to 3 different cars of people that'd stopped to see what in the hell I'd done. (I've got AWESOME stories from these dudes I'll add at the end of this)

SO, I call Bogart's Towing...what do ya know, he's WAY south of town...1:30 away :(...couldn't get ahold of nobody else that would come get me so I said come on out.

Couple of Jeep guys that were watching the broken tow truck came over after the tow truck left & tried to pull me out.  1 winch on 1 tow hook, 1 chain on the other tow hook...2 jeeps pulling, NOT A THING.
Their buddy in a whtie mid 90s Chevy 2500 comes back with his tow strap & we hook it up rear-to-rear & he starts to pull.  Strap breaks.
We hook up 2 chains & a strap & he FINALLY gets me up outta my ruts enough so I just gun it in reverse & back out.
WHEWIE!

Chevy that pulled me out
Jeep on the left was chained to me, Jeep on the right (who broke BOTH U joints) was winchin me

AND here is my baby

Right exhaust pipe was under water (water was like 4-6" deep, 6-10" of CLAY)...thank GOD I had a SI/DO muffler

20 seconds of offroading, 3 hours of waitin...HELL of a lot of fun.
OH YEAH, the guy in the green Jeep, he is the nephew of the man my dad sold his old Jeep truck too...this guy was younger than I am right now (19) when he sold that Jeep truck.

Side Story 1:
Dude said he was settin up on the mud, couldnt get a truck in there to tow him out without bustin stuff up...SO with his front & rear winches he pulled him self up a tree & built a bridge under his long bed 78 Chevy to get out

Side Story 2:
Man said be bought a 65 CJ in 64, got stuck in an Arkansas river in 65 & had to be towed out sideways.

Nice, I've gone offroading with some of my friends up here before. Its super fun but sadly they are all off at various bootcamps now :( But they would all stick together or be willing to come to the rescue when others were out offroading if one got stuck or needed help. So yeah get a buddy with a big truck if you plan to do more :p

I think I might start lookin into a Jeep sometime...that way I can be the guy that is stuck & also have the big truck to pull myself out with ;)!

I did a little work on a Jeep 4L straight 6 carbeurated, but not a whole lot. My math teacher last year was a huge Jeep injection engine enthusiast, so we talked a bit about stuff. Overall, Jeeps sound pretty decent.

In Arizona we have a law about people who drive in deep water and get stuck.  It's called the Stuck Dumbass law, and it says that people who need state emergency assistance to get themselves or their vehicles out are fined.

You guys have state emergency vehicles that do stuff like that?!...WTF, I wish our state had money for emergency vehicles...PERIOD

Honestly, if a cop or whatever drove by & tried to fine me I would be tempted to say "shove it up your ass, I'm suing you for poor maintenance & no signs."

So, it's the state's fault that you were a dumbass and tried to drive in water that was too high for your car?

1) If they tried to ticket me, I'd say yes.
2) The water was like 4" deep & I was in the the previous day.
3) I wasn't in a car.

I would like to continue & add...
4) It was a good 1'-1.5' of clay...that's what got me
5) It is a drainage area that is operated by, I assume, the state or county...some government agency anyway.  They are responsible for maintaining the land.  It is public land so I was not tresspassing...but same as in cities, if it is not properly maintained the city is at fault.
6) I guess you'd say that the owner of one of the Jeeps was a dumbass for trying to drive up a hill & breaking both U-joints?

And until this time you'd never heard of clay or mud, or you didn't know that clay/mud typically came into existence when dirt and whater were mixed?  Oh.

OK.  So, it was paved?  It was typically a driving area?

You know what's funny?  The state highways here in Arizona are state public land.  Ironically, though, there are signs at every entrance that says that trespassing is prohibited.  I work at a public facility.  We have an alarm system and when I'm the last employee out I arm it.  I know that if you were to enter my facility after hours you could be charged with trespassing.

I don't know what a U-joint is, but if he was driving up a hill that was typically used for *driving*, then no, I wouldn't think he was a dumbass for driving up the hill.

U-joint is a joint commonly used on driveshafts that are angled, or in manual/hydrolic steering columns. And I don't understand how someone could break both of them without driving like a dumbass. Steel generally doesn't just break. There's usually a reason for it.

First time I've driven through clay that deep in 2wd ;D...that was the dumbass move I did make

Unpaved but regulary maintained as it is a well traveled dirt road.  I was off of the main road, though.

There were no signs what so ever.

The hill is typically used for 4wd driving, a car wouldn't make it 10 feet on that hill.

Technically, I guess, he only broken (snapped) the rear one, he somehow managed to mess up his front joint (it still functioned partially, but made an odd clanging sound when he was driving) when coming down off the hill after breaking the rear.

I'm pretty sure (not 100%) that I've seen this guy out at the Chile Challenge (big 4x4 event)...it would've been one of the SUPER intense trails he was on...those dudes climb friggin walls with their Jeeps, its awesome.

There aren't any signs at my facility either.  It would still be trespassing.  Imagine!
