(G)VIm and Syntax Highlighting
« on: September 09, 2006, 05:21:43 pm »
I try to turn on syntax highlighting in GVIm, but all I get is "No Syntax items defined for this buffer", despite
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/dcd.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/ampl.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/dcl.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/xkb.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/latte.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/xhtml.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/manual.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/master.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/def.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/gnuplot.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/tcsh.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/whitespace.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/lite.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/lisp.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/asm68k.vim
/usr/share/vim/vim63/syntax/cpp.vim
etc...

It's really bugging me -.-

Does syntax highlighting work in vim?  I'd imagine not, but just verifying...

sidoh@muaddib:~$ whereis vim
vim: /usr/bin/vim /usr/share/vim /usr/man/man1/vim.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/vim.1.gz

Do you get similar results?

Escape from input mode (use esc)
and type:
:syn on

EDIT: For learning vim, try 'vimtutor'

EDIT 2: Ah n/m :(

That's what I'm doing!

sidoh@muaddib:~$ whereis vim
vim: /usr/bin/vim /usr/share/vim /usr/man/man1/vim.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/vim.1.gz

Do you get similar results?
[spencer@asimov ~]$ whereis vim
vim: /usr/bin/vim /usr/share/vim /usr/man/man1/vim.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/vim.1.gz

[edit]
It's working now?  I didn't do anything.  Whatever.

Nope!  I just left to play some CS, came back about an hour later, and it was highlighting :\
