Interesting new forum feature ideas?
« on: December 20, 2006, 08:37:31 am »
Does anyone have any thoughts, or ideas about new features not currently present in most forum softwares? Is there anything SMF doesn't have that you wish it did, or anything that not all forums seem to have in common that you wish it did?

Actually, there's a lot of things I wish forums DIDN'T have.  SMF does stuff pretty well.  I don't like polls all that much, and those stupid scripts that underline shit get annoying as hell.  The calendar is entirely useless, and there could be fewer profile options.

You're not generalizing like you should.  Just because those things aren't use for this particular group of people doesn't mean they are useless.  The local car forum which I'm a member of ( Over 200,000 members ) uses a calendar to help keep track of meets, fund raisers and other important events.

Yeah, the calender is a useful feature. I'm thinking more along the lines of.. new things, though. Maybe features never before present in any forum. Can anyone think of anything that'd be of use, but new?

Post modification history.  Basically, when somebody edit's/deletes a post, have the ability to go back and see what they changed, and maybe restore a previous revision.  Useful in some cases.

Good idea, but wouldn't that database fill up fast?  I mean, sometimes I may edit a post because I see something small.  Maybe have an automated length of time before it dumps the database?

I'd bet that you're currently bloated like a water ballon on a hot summer's day.

That analogy doesn't even make sense.  Why would a water balloon be especially bloated on a hot summer's day? For your sake, I hope there wasn't too much logic testing on your LSAT.

Yeah, it'd be just like making a new post.

Use diff's.
Duh.  But you'd want to have some sort of interface over the diff to make it more readable to the average user.  Something like Eclipse does, but less intense.

I've thought of that too, iago.  I think that'd be a great feature.

Diff's? What are diffs?

Something that represents the differences in two texts.

Have an example site that has something similar to this?

I have a programming folder, and I have nothing of value there

Running with Code has a new home!

Our species really annoys me.
