Ok so i wanted to buy some new ram and i thought they were all the same until i went to the store and figured out there was like 20 types of ram such as ddrpc3200 ddrpc14...
so i was wondering how you figure out which type you need.
I looked at my MOBo and i didn't see anything. I also looked at the stock ram and it didn't say on the stick.
I have a  Dell 9200
intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
6300 @ 1.86GHz.....
HELP?!?!?!

According to that you need DDR2 533 Desktop Memory. Usually you check the motherboard manual for the specifics. And IIRC, you can buy the faster DDR2's (667/800/1000) it'll just run at 533.

This is a great site to buy RAM from http://www.crucial.com/

They have a great system match up tool it also suggests memory.

I always suggest this site to my family so they don't bug me for simple upgrades.

"So, if I take the RAM out of one computer and put it in another, what happens to the data that was saved on it?.."

Shut your computer down, take a stick out, and count how many pins are on one side of it. We can go from there.

By the way, I can say beyond reasonable doubt that you're using DDR2.

money stuff... i dont want to spend on something i am not going to use cause i already have 512 so 1 gig would be kinda overkill

Ergot

No it wouldn't. 2 gb of RAM is recommended for a lot of things now.

512 is the requirement for base vista, IIRC.  If you upgrade to it you'll need at least 1g to not suck hardcore.
And like a fool I believed myself, and thought I was somebody else...

BigAznDaddy

just got paid so i might  go and get a 1 gb stick today..
