Subway figured that rather than people getting the 6" daily specials at whatever price it was before (I think $2.49 or $2.99), they could increase their overall revenue by offering footlongs for $5 and reverting the original cost of the 6" back to what it used to be prior to their daily specials.

To justify their reasoning for you to get a footlong, they say "you're practically paying the same for a 6" as you would a footlong," which compels people to toss in the extra two bucks plus some change.
